Backups



Check out GoodSync for backup to USB or it can backup to any/multiple cloud or FTP accounts. This is a pay-for app.

Also good is FreeFileSync which does folder comparison and backups, however it does not have the ability to backup to cloud accounts. But it's free (as in speech and as in beer) and it works on Linux too.

Cheesy Chicken & Lime Chili













Ingredients
  • 1/2 tbsp canola oil
  • 3/4 lb (375g) ground chicken or turkey
  • 2 cups chopped onions
  • 1 can (10oz/284 mL) cheddar cheese soup
  • 1 can (19oz/540 mL) white kidney beans, drained, rinsed
  • 1 cup diced green or red pepper
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 1 1/4 tsp chili power
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 tbsp chopped cilantro
Directions
  • Heat oil in large non-stick skillet at medium-high. Add chicken and onion and cook and stir until chicken is cooked through and liquid from onion evaporates – about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in all remaining ingredients except diced tomato and cilantro and heat to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 3 minutes.
  • Stir in tomatoes and heat through. Sprinkle with cilantro and serve.
  • [optional]   Garnish also with fresh green onions and lime slices; serve with toasted whole wheat pita triangles. This chili is great while you are watching the game!Just a brief simmer time is all that is needed so that the vegetables keep their garden-fresh texture and taste. If you prefer more tender vegetables, simmer the chili a little longer – the mixture will get slightly more liquid and the flavours more blended.

Spicy Coleslaw with Avacado Aioli










Ingredients
  • 1/2 green cabbage, finely shredded
  • 1 small bunch radishes, julienned
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 small bunch dill roughly chopped
  • 1 tbsp parsley, chopped
  • 3 avocados
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 3 tbsp chopped basil
  • 2 tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 jalapeno, seeded & minced
  • salt & pepper
Directions

Scoop the avocado flesh into a medium bowl and coarsely mash with a fork. Fold in the sour cream, basil, garlic, lemon juice, lime juice, jalapeno. Season with salt and pepper.

In a large bowl, toss together the cabbage, radishes, green onions, dill, parsley. Pour the avocado aioli over the salad, season with salt and pepper, toss well.

Beer Batter Halibut










Ingredients
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 bottle (341ml) beer
  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 1/2 lbs halibut fillets
  • 2l vegetable oil (for frying)
Directions

In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and cornstarch. In a second bowl, beat together eggs and milk. Mix in beer. Stir in the flour mixture. Season with salt and pepper. In a electric deep fryer or a heavy saucepan, heat oil to 375F. Coat the halibut fillets one at a time in the batter, then submerge in hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes.

Beneficial House Plants

These house plants are beneficial to your health, you should have one or more of these in your house.

  1. Bamboo Palm: According to NASA, it removes formaldahyde and is also said to act as a natural humidifier.

  2. Snake Plant: Found by NASA to absorb nitrogen oxides and formaldahyde.

  3. Areca Palm: One of the best air purifying plants for general air cleanliness.

  4. Spider Plant: Great indoor plant for removing carbon monoxide and other toxins or impurities. Spider plants are one of three plants NASA deems best at removing formaldahyde from the air.

  5. Peace Lily: Peace lilies could be called the “clean-all.” They’re often placed in bathrooms or laundry rooms because they’re known for removing mold spores. Also know to remove formaldahyde and trichloroethylene.

  6. Gerbera Daisy: Not only do these gorgeous flowers remove benzene from the air, they’re known to improve sleep by absorbing carbon dioxide and giving off more oxygen over night.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • 2 tbsp cream of tartar
  • 0.5 cup salt
  • 2 cups flour

Directions
  • Mix the salt with the hot water first to dissolve
  • Add all the other ingredients
  • Mix together
  • Knead and roll until workable, adding a little extra flour at a time to get past the sticky stage

Big Mac Secret Sauce












Ever wanted to make your backyard burger taste like a Big Mac?
Here's how you make the Big Mac secret sauce.

Ingredients
  • 0.25 cup salad dressing (e.g. Miracle Whip)
  • 0.25 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tbsp French dressing (salad dressing)
  • 0.5 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1.5 tbsp dill pickle relish
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp dried, minced, onion
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp ketchup
  • 0.25 tsp salt

Directions
  • Mix ingredients in a bowl, stirring well.
  • Microwave on high for 25 secs
  • Stir well again
  • Cover
  • Refrigerate for minimum one hour before serving

Baked Onion Rings











 
Ingredients:
  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 2/3 cup flour of choice
  • 2/3 cup plus 1 tbsp vegetable broth
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (or arrowroot flour)
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast (optional, but recommended)
  • 3/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 to 2 tbsp black sesame seeds (optional)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp dried herbs (I used 1 tsp each basil & oregano)

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 425F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with cooking oil. Slice onion into rings, 3/4 inch in width (larger than shown in pictures as I made mine too thin), and reserve about 15 to 22 or so, wrapping up the leftovers for another use.
  • In a shallow dish, whisk together the batter ingredients (flour, broth, cornstarch).
  • In another shallow dish, whisk together the coating ingredients (cornmeal, breadcrumbs, nutritional yeast, salt, sesame seeds, garlic powder, and herbs).
  • With a fork, dip an onion ring into the batter, coating all sides. Now transfer it to the coating mixture and toss it around a bit. Use a clean & dry hand to scoop up coating and sprinkle it all over the ring. If at any time your hands get sticky or coated, simply rinse and dry before starting again. Place onion rings on prepared baking sheets and repeat for the rest. Don't worry if things get messy or they don't coat perfectly…  (You will have coating leftover that isn't used up.)
  • Bake for about 18 minutes at 425F, flipping once after 10 minutes. You can broil them for a minute or two at the end to brown. Serve with your favourite dip or ketchup. These are best served immediately.
Note: Keep in mind, you'll have coating and batter leftover that isn't used up. This is necessary because you need a good base for dipping.
And if you want to add quinoa to the batter, try puffed quinoa.

Refried Beans


Ingredients
  • 1 bag of Pinto beans
  • 1 large diced onion
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 3-4 crushed garlic
  • 3 tbsp salt
  • pepper (to taste)
Directions
  • Soak beans overnight in water in a crock pot. The next day drain and refill with just enough water to cover the beans.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients to the crock pot
  • Cook on high all day.
  • Mash the beans with a potato masher just before you're ready to eat them. If they appear too watery you can continue to cook at reduce the liquid further. The more you heat them the thicker they become.

Guacamole













Ingredients
  • 3-4 ripe avacados diced
  • 1/2 red onion
  • 2 diced garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsp fresh chopped cilantro
  • juice from one whole lemon
  • Salt & pepper
  • 1 tbsp Cayenne powder
Directions
  • Mash ingredients together with a fork and serve in a bowl

Blueberry Mojito









Be careful... these are addictive!

Ingredients
  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 tablespoons blueberries, fresh or frozen (divided)
  • 1/2 - 3/4 cup lemonade
  • splash of soda water
  • 1 ounce light rum
  • 1/2 ounce dark rum
  • mint sprig for garnish
  • lime slice for garnish
Directions
In a tall 16-ounce glass, add mint leaves, lime juice and sugar; mash the ingredients with the back of a spoon or a "muddler" until fragrant. Add 2 tablespooons of the blueberries and mash until juicy.

Fill the glass three quarters with ice. Add lemonade until the glass is two-thirds full. Add splash of soda, light rum and remaining blueberries; stir. Slowly pour dark rum into the drink so it floats on top.

Garnish with a sprig of mint and slice of lime; serve immediately. Serves 1
