What Day Does That Date Fall On?

Sometimes you want to know what day of the week a certain date will fall on, or did fall on. This site has a cool utility to figure that out. Will it change your life? Maybe. Probably not though. It's just kinda cool.

Internet Explorer Setting Via Group Policy

Internet explorer settings are a combination of the local machine registry settings and the current user registry settings.  Whichever is the most restrictive is the policy that takes effect.  Changing the local machine policy on the terminal server is easy enough, however it will typically not work because the current user settings end up taking preference.

There are two ways to tackle this issue.  The first way is to:
1. Set the trusted site within the Local machine registry settings
2. Set the local machine registrry settings to be used ONLY and not the current user registry settings. This causes all users to have the same settings. (NOTE: the current users settings still show up the UI however the Local machine settings are in effect.

1. Add a new key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap called "Domains"  It is within this registry hive that you can manually add trusted sites that apply to the entire local machine.  In this case the terminal server.  The way this works is that you add a key for each domain that you want to trust.  For about:internet you create a new key called "internet" within Domains.  Within internet you create a REG_DWORD value named "about" and then assign it the hexadecimal value 2 (which means this site is in zone 2 (trusted)).  Another example would be google.com.  You would create a key called google.com and then within create a REG_DWORD value named * (for all subdomains) and then assign hexadecimal 2.

You can even log in as yourself and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains and you will be able to see how the ones you have added from within IE show up.  Essentially you need to recreate this in the Local Computer hive instead of your current user one.

2.  This may not be neccessary, but there is a registry setting that you can add to cause all users to use the local machine settings for IE and not their individual user settings.  (NOTE: this can be very difficult to manage becasue now you must make all IE configs within the local machine registry this is not advised unless you find it neccessary)

This is easier to paste from technet:
"If the Security Zones: Use only machine settings setting in Group Policy is enabled, or if the Security_HKLM_only DWORD value is present and has a value of 1 in the following registry subkey, only local computer settings are used and all users have the same security settings:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
With the Security_HKLM_only policy enabled, HKLM values will be used by Internet Explorer. However, the HKCU values will still be displayed in the zone settings on the Security tab in Internet Explorer. In Internet Explorer 7, the Security tab of the Internet Options dialog box displays the following message to indicate that settings are managed by the system administrator: "

The second way is to add these keys to the zonemap of each user that you needs current user directory.  I would reccommend trying to add on the local machine first.  Note that despite these settings these sites will not show up in the trusted sites. Only keys added in the current user hive show up in the UI.

Let's face it, Google would prefer you only check your email via web browser. They make their money from advertisements, not from giving you a free email account.

Bloody Brain

October is here and that means it's time to start thinking about Halloween and all its associated rituals. One of those is dressing up in something scary (or sexy scary!) but what about your drinks? Dress up your drink like a glob of brain floating in a jar.

On to what you're here for: the recipes. You can probably swap out the vodka or schnapps for a different clear alcohol if you prefer.

Ingredients

  • 1.5oz vodka or schnapps
  • 1/8oz lime juice
  • 0.5oz Irish cream liqueur
  • 5 drops Grendadine
Directions
  • Pour the juice and  vodka or schnapps into a small glass (cordial)
  • Gently pour in the Irish cream, drizzle down the side of a spoon
  • Add Grenadine drops, one at a time

Galaxy S2 LTE keeps buzzing and will not turn on.

I found out that this issue was actually due to the power button getting stuck somehow. In my case, it was due to its being left in a backpack during a volleyball game and stepped on.

To fix it, you need to remove the back plate, soak it in alcohol and contact cleaner, then blow on it with high pressure air. It took awhile, but eventually it came back to life.

Bic Pen Cutlery

It was only a matter of time before someone came up with these. Everyone's got some Bic pens lying around the office or in the car. And now you can actually put those ubiquitous writing utensils to good use (I'm assuming here that you will only be using them at work for doodling pictures of space battles, pew pew pew!) for a change. These Din-Ink Retools are very nifty. Of course it's probably easier to just get some plastic cutlery, or heck even real cutlery for that matter. But then you wouldn't be eating your low-fat organic salad with pens now, would you?

Superior Kola

I'm not a really big fan of colas, but we thought we'd give this one a try. All natural Superior Q Kola with organic ingredients. They started making their cola from scratch to get back to the original flavour that included notes of tang, spicy, sweet, and savory. Add to it some spiced rum and you have a winner.

Blanche de Chambly

Blanche de Chambly is a nice wheat ale, with notes of citrus. Chill it, especially in a cooler of ice on your patio. Great for a summer evening bevvy as you watch the sun set. From Chambly, Quebec and it has a cork, so you know it's gotta be good!

Real Ginger Ale

Did you know that ginger ale was once made with real ginger? I knew that, but I wondered what it would have tasted like back in the olde days. Well now I know. Bruce Cost Ginger Ale is the real deal. Give this stuff a try, it's a very different taste to the normal ginger ales you find nowadays. And it goes nicely with rye whiskey.

Wild Vines Blackberry Merlot

We found this little gem the other day. It seemed a bit different, but I like sweeter fruit based wines as well as the dry wines. This one in particular though is quite tasty. A fruity merlot mixed with blackberry accents. Serve it chilled.

Want to check how strong your password is? Visit the Password Checker website (www.passwordmeter.com) and see. OK, that last part's not true, but feel free to email us your bank account and password so that we, um, can "check" your security.

A Wee Angry Scotch

I gave this a try a little while ago. A dark ale with a hoppy taste to it. Definitely a distinctive taste, that's for sure. I think I probably wouldn't get another one of these, but the bottle is cool and if you like dark hoppy ales then your opinion of its taste might differ from mine.

Google Voice for Canada

I have a Google Voice account, which is pretty spiffy. Except that it has a U.S. area code, which makes it not super awesome for dealing with my local clients. About a year ago, Dell Voice emerged, which was very nearly the same thing as Google Voice. They've now switched the name back to Fongo. Implemented not as well, and you have to pay if you want Canadian texting, and you have to pay more if you want North American texting. But it's about $2/mo & $3/mo respectively, so it's not too bad.

You also have to register an address, since Canadian numbers are required by the CRTC to have an address for 911 service. Stupid, I know, since you could be anywhere with your phone. Also, I have a Speakout Wireless phone that I never associated an address with so obviously it's not a total requirement.

If you're looking for for an inexpensive phone line to add on to your cell for either free or very cheap, look into Fongo.

Auto-Installer & Updater (Ninite)

Have you ever found it to be a pain in the butt to install a bunch of programs when you're setting up a new machine? Or even just having to keep track of those programs and update them manually?

Ninite is your solution. It allows you to create a custom installer that will automagically download and install the programs you select. If you run that same installer a month or two later, it will update all that software to the latest version, if required. This thing has saved me so much time.

They have a pro version which will update programs for you on a schedule, or you can use them as part of a logon script (or any kind of script really) so it can be very useful for larger scale deployments.

Works with Windows & Linux. Sorry, no Mac version.

Check it out at www.ninite.com

Find User SID

Sometimes you need to find out a user's SID...
c:\> wmic useraccount get name,sid
Or you could do it the Microsoft Way, but that's more difficult for some reason.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
Under the ProfileList key, you will see the SIDs. By selecting each one individually, you can look at the value entry and see what user name is associated with that particular SID.
